I’ve never seen a 'Full Lunch' (1991), but I found myself thinking about it often at the 2024 London Film Festival screening of Queer: perhaps to be expected, as William S Burroughs provided the source material for both films. with an accent clearly not his own

The sets are decorated almost exclusively in block colors – dull reds and olive greens, for example – and have a vaguely unreal, pure Technicolor look that led me to believe the intention was to pay homage to the era in which the film is set. But if that’s the case, why the decidedly 1950s rock and techno soundtrack? Daniel Craig (is it my imagination or is he starting to look like Sid James?) is a blast in the lead role as he constantly has to come up with nonsense. Drew Starkey is able to give a more nuanced performance as the manipulative Eugene and certainly looks the part.

It was good to see once, but I won’t be watching it again

Leslie Manville is unrecognizable as a doctor living in a South American jungle – well done to the makeup team! This is the kind of movie that I feel is more about the artistic style than the story.
