Plot
Anora, a young prostitute from Brooklyn, impulsively meets and marries the son of an oligarch
Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is put in jeopardy when her parents leave for New York to annul the marriage. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers brief reviews of 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous and curiously erotic Mercy. Karren Karagulian has appeared in all of Sean Baker’s films, and this is her most prominent role in any of his films. In a Las Vegas scene, a character refers to “McCarran Airport.” Although Las Vegas International Airport was known as McCarran International Airport for many decades, its name was changed to Harry Reid International Airport in late 2021. FOR! SCREAMING!. I just saw one of the best films of the year. The Athens Film Festival has already started and, at the opening ceremony, we were lucky enough to see Anora. And let me tell you, this film is amazing.
Give us a break”
From the first scene you are glued to the screen and that feeling does not stop. As the film progressed, I kept thinking: “Come on, sooner or later it has to slow down, right? No, there are no pauses, no drops, not even a hint of slowing down. Anora has one of the best paces I have ever seen in a film. Anora, a prostitute and tough girl from Brooklyn, meets the son of a Russian oligarch and, in a whirlwind of madness, marries him.
The lead actress, Mikey Madison, who plays Anora, is a true revelation
But her fairytale soon turns into a nightmare when news reaches Russia and her parents do everything they can to annul her marriage. She effortlessly combines sensuality, femininity, childlike innocence and tenacity in a way that leaves you speechless. It will go very, very far and don’t be surprised if you see it nominated for an Oscar. I would also personally give a nomination for Best Supporting Actor to Mark Eidelshtein, who plays the Russian son. It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
It’s a modern Cinderella story that’s realistic, violent, raw, funny and ultimately sweet
Fantastic.Anora is a punch in the face to the traditional concept of a fairy tale. Only, in the real world, no prince is coming to your rescue: you have to pick up the pieces and get back up.
